Our Time at the Hospital

Monday: My Birthday… literally. It started out just as any normal day, in my warm floaty space and ended up in this big room full of strangers. Although I stayed in my home almost the whole day, I was carefully evicted at 11:10 PM. The lights were very bright and the nurses got me cleaned up and ready to meet mom & dad. Dad cut my cord and I had officially arrived. The room was cold, so I got warmed up under the heating lamp. The only thing I recognized were these wiggly things called fingers which seemed to taste pretty good. Then it was time to get weighed and measured (5 lbs 9 ounces and 19.5” long). After a little wait to declare me perfectly healthy it was time to meet mom. I knew her voice from our belly time together but now I finally got to put a face with the voice. She is amazing for taking care of me this whole time, so I rewarded her by stopping crying immediately when placed next to her. After a very long day we were moved to our new room to settle in for the night. Everyone is very sleepy, so that is all for now.

Quote of the day - from Mom right after giving birth: “Motherhood will be easy compare to that (childbirth)”

Tuesday: It’s my first full day in the world. My baby routine got off on the right foot with plenty of eating, pooping and sleeping. Much to my parent’s delight I like to sleep for hours at a time. They tell me I’m getting the right amount of rest so hopefully I can continue on this pattern. Mom took care of all the feeding, she smells so good I calm down every time I’m near her.
Dad changed my diaper with some assistance from Auntie Kristin…he did pretty good but will get better with more tries. They are still learning how to fold the swaddle blanket for me so the nurse helps them. My parents will be great with the right training. I’ll get them up to speed before you know it. My first round of visitors came by and it was a pleasure to meet everyone for the first time.

Wednesday: Last full day at the hospital! Today I slept a lot, about 16 hours. Dad got to feed me a few times with a finger and tube combo. At first I gave him a perplexed look because I have tried my fingers plenty and nothing food related has come out yet. But after some insistence I gave him the benefit of the doubt. Low and behold it is a magic finger that has food. From now on I trust him to be able to feed me in addition to mom. He has also got the diaper changing down pretty well, so I have decided to cooperate and straighten my “frog” legs so he can fasten the tabs even easier – good teamwork. Mom got some much needed rest and recovery time as dad and I bonded from 7:30 P-12:30 A. I keep hearing about the kitties that are waiting to meet me when I get home. Apparently I am on pace to sleep as much as Hobbes (orange tiger cat, 7 yrs old). I also understand that Elsa (black cat, 4 yrs old) had tested my stroller for comfort and reported back quite favorably. The second day of visitors had some familiar names…can you tell my Grandparents are excited or what? Their love is always appreciated.

Quote of the day - from Dad after the last feeding: “The 1st time she only got 65% of the formula down and the rest on her shirt. The next time it was more like 85%. Always leave
room from improvement.”
